Spring is quickly approaching and, as every savvy beauty addict knows, it’s good to have an idea beforehand on what’s going to be hot or not in Beauty during the next few months. Sure, it’s not time to put down our blue eyeshadow and matte lipsticks yet, but it’s easy to see how we may be advantaged by knowing what to expect (and what to restock) for the warm season.
As always, summer calls for a more subdued look, with glossy skin, thorough skincare to minimize makeup, multitasking products that don’t feel heavy on the skin, glosses and hydrating formulas: what’s new, then?
From the backstage of the runways, it seems like this season we’re going to see pops of electric pink of the lips and lashes glitters and flecks of golden foil, French red lipstick (but carefully blotted, to give that blended and soft twist to the look) and makeup-no-makeup with an eye for skincare and Glass Skin.
Pink
Pink is (again) the new black, and definitely one of the hottest colors of the season.
Perhaps, the most scenography display of glossy hot pink hues was the one by makeup artist James Kaliardos for Rodarte, who created a colorful, graphic (yet nevertheless delicate) makeup using all Nars Cosmetics.
In the backstage of Ulla Johnson, we witnessed a popping pink mascara, while Bella Hadid sported a cat-eye flick with a touch of pink eyeshadow signed MAC Cosmetics. From Baby Pink to lilac, the next season is going to be a “50 shades of pink” free-for-all: the shade is versatile, and it can work for bon-ton and subdued looks with gloss and a touch of blush as well as more intense and modern makeups, with neon vibes and popping lip shades.
A pink for every mood of our Spring/Summer is precisely what we’re signing for.
Glitter
Metallic foil on the lips, a sprinkle of glitters on the eye and it’s summer already. It’s interesting to experiment with sparkles and light, especially when the sun is bright and warm. Pat McGrath created for Versace a metallic greeny-blue cat eye using the colors of the season (green is going to be a must next Summer) while Halpern model’s rocked a breath-taking golden eye makeup.
However, no rule says you have to go extra: yes, on the runways we saw a few stunning examples (Tadashi Shoji’s galaxy-inspired eyes, or Giambattista Valli’s glittery hair) but many options exist to satisfy the taste of who prefers a more pastel look, as well.
Choose a glittery or metallic eyeliner – or, why not, lipstick – and play with the different finishes and hues, creating an effect that may be sheer or more decisive: after all, glitter means fun.
May the glitter trend never die.
Glass Skin
Yes: Glass Skin will be a great protagonist of this season as well. In many occasions we saw a bright, radiant skin on the runways: well-rested and sun-kissed, this trend allows our skin to breathe, although in summer (and all year long, really) SPF is always a key factor in the health of our face.
For example, at the Stella McCartney’s backstage the MUAs used Tata Harper’s products to prep the Model’s skin, minimizing the use of foundation through deep hydration. Imperfections and blemishes are fought with a thorough skincare routine and hydration of the skin, as well as concealed with lightweight foundations and spot-on concealers, and the “perfect canvas” is often matched with a delicate, almost invisible makeup.
Natural
Makeup-no-makeup, a light touch of blush and a natural radiance are the vibes for this summer: in the hot season less is more, mainly because we’re a little lazier and with the holidays we tend to boost the organization of our routine, using fewer products and more all-in-one sticks that can take care of our makeup almost single-handedly. Tom Pecheux for Altuzarra used warm shades, especially soft flushed cheeks and a veil of orange eyeshadow, to create a post-summer radiance. The look itself is very feminine, and Damien Boissinot created the beach waves and hairstyle which reminded us of a surfer on the beach.
Also, the encounter between a subdued bronzer (the 90s are back but in a completely renewed version) and highlighting may help with the sun-kissed look: a soft flush of color that will make us look as if we’ve been tanning for a while.
Red Lips
French red lips are always a classy touch, but next spring we’re going to see a lot more of the “bold red lip” outside the evening looks.
From Chanel to Moschino, with the mandatory Chloé and Givenchy, on the SS19 Runways, we were given a sneak peek of what was to come: a popping, vibrant red, often matched with a natural face with just the tiniest bit of foundation and natural, Instagram-worthy eyebrows. Also, forget the ultra-defined looks and say hello to blotted lipstick, tapped on the lips with the finger to blend the product on the edges and softening the color. Don’t waste too much time perfecting your over-lining skills, and even though it may be a bit early to get rid of a good lip liner, it’s surely time to make way for a more blurred, soft look.
