I’ve known Estée for 5 years.
I correct myself: I grew up a little bit with her in the last 5 years. Still not quite true. But this is what you feel if you have been following Estée for some time.
Estée was one of the first to talk about natural beauty, to not hide your imperfections but to exalt them, thinking that they are what makes you unique, and with the publication of her book “Bloom” she sent a “love letter” into the world to all those who live depression or anxiety in their everyday. Without shame, because there is nothing to be ashamed of in talking about mental health. Not because it doesn’t hurt or isn’t difficult, but because it’s necessary.
From beauty and makeup tips, she brought us into her life with such spontaneity that it’s impossible not to trust her, and she has introduced us many women and points of view of the world through her podcast “On the line with Estée Lalonde.” With collaborations with Lancôme and a dream collection with Daisy London Jewellery, Estée never stops, even if she can’t wait to enjoy some relax time with her dog.
If you want to know what are her favorite makeup products, from who she has learned the art of glowing skin, and what’s the book on her nightstand, then don’t miss our new Beauty Talk with Estée.
You are a writer, an influencing person (not only in the beauty world), a designer, plus you speak about everything you love and your life. What kind of journey has this been so far?
_____
Sometimes I really have to sit back and take in my life because it is so crazy! I never in a million years thought I would have the type of career that I do. I started creating content online when I was a student and took things day by day, learning as I went. I’m doing things today that I would have been terrified of in my early blogging days! Even a phonecall intimidated me when I was 19 years old.
In the years, beauty has changed. What is beauty for you now? And how did you evolve along with your passion?
_____
To me beauty is all about enhancing natural beauty. Like so many women, I’m constantly rushing around and I like to have a beauty routine that accommodates that and is easy to maintain throughout the day. I have experimented with so many trends over the years which was very fun, but now I pretty much know the products I love.
“To me beauty is all about enhancing natural beauty.”
Your book “Bloom” is about “Becoming who you are meant to be:” What advice would you give to people who struggle to love themselves and to find their own journey?
_____
I think the best advice is to understand that it is a journey and you’re not going to have everything figured out instantly (if ever). I’ve been finding comfort in that recently.
In your book, you talked also about anxiety and I truly think that speaking about some difficult topics is the key to open to others and to help others. What was the most difficult thing when you wrote it? Was it freeing?
______
Since writing my book I have spoken a lot more about my struggles with anxiety and depression, but the book was definitely the first time I felt like I was really making a personal statement about it. I don’t think writing it down was necessarily freeing, but hearing the hundreds of responses from people who read my book and found comfort in it was what really made me realise how impactful talking about mental health can be. It’s very important to me to share my personal mental health story even though it can make me feel vulnerable at times.
“…hearing the hundreds of responses from people who read my book and found comfort in it…
…was what really made me realise how impactful talking about mental health can be.”
Speaking of books…what’s the one on your nightstand?
_____
I’m currently reading “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running” by Murakami.
What is happiness for you now and where do you find it?
_____
The smallest things make me happy. I travel a lot and am constantly on the move, so I find happiness just being at home with my dog! I love to relax at home-it’s my sanctuary!
In the beauty field: what are the brands you relate the most to and what are your beauty and makeup must-haves of the moment?
_____
I really love so many beauty and skincare brands, but lately I have been really into Oskia, Vapour Beauty and of course Glossier!
“I love to relax at home-it’s my sanctuary!”
In the Daisy Jewellery page, we read: “Estée Lalonde collection fuses the bohemian style and freedom of the 1970s with positive mantras, embodying the decade’s spirit with an effortless, modern edge.” Why the 70’s and what’s your mantra behind this collection?
______
Growing up I always told my Mom that I wished I was born in the 1970’s! I love the music and the fashion and to me, it’s one of those decades I look back to and wish I could go back in time and experience! I wanted my collection to reflect jewellery that had been passed down from one generation to another and the sunburst pattern has always spoken to me.
Do you have a fashion tip to suggest to people who want to wear your jewellery collection?
_____
I wanted to make sure that my collection was wearable for everyone. I think all of my pieces are super easy to wear on a day to day basis, so just with jeans and a white t-shirt! That being said, the pieces also work in a more dressed up context!
What is the inspiration behind it? And what do you want people to feel through your jewellery?
_____
I really look at my jewellery as a form of armour. I’m one of those people who feel naked if I leave the house without my rings or jewellery. The cornerstone of the collection is my sunburst shield necklace which is my favourite piece to hold when I’m feeling anxious or stressed out. I want people to find strength and empowerment in this collection.
What is your favorite piece of the collection?
_____
It is honestly so hard to choose a favourite piece but I will say that I rarely take off my snake chain necklace or my rising sun frame ring!
Your podcast “On the line with Estée Lalonde” was born as a place where women can talk about everything they want but is there a particular message that you would like to share with every woman in the world?
_____
I really believe that community and conversation is the key to change. I really want to create a safe space on my podcast for my guests to talk about whatever they want to! From being single to reiki to never wanting to have kids, I really want the show to be limitless.
“I really believe that community and conversation is the key to change.”
We find that your way to share is very true to yourself. How are you able to stay true in a world like this of social media when a lot of things seem fake or forced?
_____
That’s very kind! Well firstly, I’m a horrible actress so even if I wanted to force something I would find it near impossible. Authenticity is the most important thing to me because without my audience’s trust I am nothing. I always try to work on projects that I believe in and make sense.
What is creativity for you and what part does it play in your daily routine?
_____
Ideas are always flowing (good and bad) and I try to get inspiration everywhere! I’m surrounded by so many creative people in my life in totally different industries and it’s always great to get different perspectives. Sometimes however I can hit a wall and in that case, I find the best thing to do is to take a break.
