At first (many, many years ago) in the United States, then it spread throughout the rest of the world and now on a large scale also in Italy: Netflix has entered on the market and it has become a big part of our lives very quickly, allowing us to take advantage of the fastest streaming and watch an entire TV series in a heartbeat! Who among us has never rejoiced at the showing up of the notification on the Netflix profile, meaning “new episodes”, and watched them in a row, even giving up to some precious hours of sleep?? Well, we surely do it very often.
For those who still don’t know, Netflix is the largest network of the Internet TV in the world, with over 83 million subscribers in more than 190 countries, who every day watch more than 125 million hours of TV shows and films, including original series, documentaries and feature films. Subscribers can watch anything they want at any time, anywhere and on any screen connected to the Internet.
A few days ago Netflix has published some very interesting data on how consumers prefer to enjoy TV series and how they Binge Watch, depending on the TV series. For those who do not know what this term means, here for you the definition that might put a tag on what you’ve been doing for the last months 🙂 Binge Watch indicates a “compulsive” and fast vision of all episodes of the same TV series as soon as it becomes available in the platform.
In short, the typical “marathon” that maybe belongs in the mentality of those who years ago decided to look in two days all the episodes of the “Harry Potter” or “The Lord of the Rings” sagas.
But although Binge Watching is now a common phenomenon, not all series are viewed in the same way and Netflix subscribers around the world dictate their own “laws” on how to watch some TV series.
The fact is that Netflix recently revealed the “Binge Scale“, or Scale of Binge Watching, that shows us the TV series that we devour and those we prefer to savor with calm. They examined global vision of over 100 of the most-watched TV series in more than 190 countries and, organizing the series in relation to this benchmark, interesting trends emerged. And there are some common trends that are the same in the whole world.
Here the results of the Binge Scale:
SHOWS WE CAN’T STOP WATCHING:
There are two types of TV series that we watch depending on the Binge Watching phenomenon: on one hand the ones that capture senses, which have the ability to go straight to the stomach and who have the classic ingredients of horror or intense thriller.
1) BREAKING BAD
2) THE WALKING DEAD
3) SENSE 8
4) ORPHAN BLACK
5) PENNY DREADFUL
7) Z NATION
8) THE 100
Similarly, the comedies with dramatic shades, which stimulate the curiosity of the consumer, enjoy the same vision of the most intense thriller!
1) ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
2) FLAKED
3) GRACE &FRANKIE
SHOWS WE PREFER TO SAVOUR:
According to the studies, subscribers prefer to be slowly seduced by TV series with complex plots that require more attention and less action. They love to linger longer on dramatic series details, especially if set in the recent past such as:
1) NARCOS
2) PEAKY BLINDERS
3) THE AMERICANS
4) HOUSE OF CARDS
5) BLOODLINE
Even the irreverent comedies are watched with less frenetic rhythms, perhaps, as social critics says, it’s because humorous jokes and endearing characters, so imperfect as entertaining, require a timeframe of more peaceful enjoyment.
1) BOJACK HORSEMAN
2) UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT
3) LOVE
Shows of great success such as Daredevil and Marco Polo are in the middle of the Binge Scale.
Cindy Holland, vice president for Netflix’s original content said: “As indicated by the Binge Scale, the fruition of a show is influenced by a spectrum of variants ranging from the emotional reaction to the intellectual stimulation. The great thing about Netflix is that subscribers can find series that passionate in all circumstances and at their own pace, whether it be enjoyed with Bloodline calm or make a feast of Orange is the New Black “.
And you, what’s the tv series you prefer to “devour”?
