Trained at the Scuola di Arte per la Ceramica in Faenza, the Accademia Albertiniana of Turin, – where he learned metalworking techniques at the studio of Arnaldo Pomodoro in Urbino- and graduated from the London College of Contemporary Arts, Nicola Bacchilega is one of the most interesting and visionary designers of our times. Chosen by Versace for a collaboration with the Atelier, where he worked side-by-side with Luigi Massi, he created clothes for personalities such as Dua Lipa, Madonna, and Jennifer Lopez. His creations recall craftsmanship, his background is in sculpture and his collections are real wearable works of art that are inspired by a strong and resolute kind of woman, the predominant figure of his creative process.
His latest SS21 collection represents elements already developed in the other collections in a new way, such as the famous print that derives from gold ceramics, the drapery, and the bustier. He mixed the tradition of Italian craftsmanship and ceramic processing with the novelty of the contemporary world in a personal and collective metamorphosis.
Are you ready to get to know him better?
Nicola Bacchilega – The figure of the woman
His wearable sculptures in gold-glazed ceramic are inspired by a golden Superwoman, a personal reinterpretation of Nietzsche’s Ubermensch, an image that embodies all the feminine power of women, who give life and without whom any future is unimaginable. A female figure who, thanks to gold – that reflects light, represents the sun, and is the origin of divinization – transforms her into a super goddess.
The women from whom Nicola takes inspiration and for whom Nicola creates, are strong, self-confident women who know what they want and do whatever it takes to get it, and who want to feel beautiful in their uniqueness, without fear of expressing themselves.
Nicola Bacchilega – Handicraft
The brand believes in the promotion of Italian craftsmanship and in a production that supports ethical and local business.
The attention to the female figure is also the protagonist in the creation process of clothes: the designer has in fact collaborated for the creation of his garments with the laboratory of Mirta Morigi and Carla Lega, the artisan workshops in Faenza whose workers are women who actively participated in the process giving life to the matter.
Nicola Bacchilega – Community
Uniqueness and enhancement of diversity: these are the values in which Nicola Bacchilega believes and which are represented by the NB Girls, a community where bold women are the real protagonists, in which the names that stand out are those of important personalities such as Tana Mongeau, Miss Keta, Angeloumae, Ikram Abdi Omar, Paloma Faith, Raye, Weruche Opia, Joan Thiele, but also models and “everyday life” girls.
The message that the designer wants to communicate (loud and clear) is that “we are beautiful because we are all different” and that every woman has her own physicality, her own exceptionality, and deserves to be represented for what she really is.
In fact, the brand ambassadors are chosen for their singularity, regardless of whether they are professional models or not: an important step to define a new concept of beauty in which the individuality of each person represents the only possible future canon.
Nicola Bacchilega – Exoticism and distant worlds
There are many references to an exotic and distant world, from which the collections draw inspiration for a mix of different and colorful cultures.
The contaminations come from Brazil, with its Orisha goddesses representing the force of nature, and from Marrakech, where the designer had the opportunity to work with local artisans observing their techniques, blending Maghrebi manufacturing with contemporaneity in some contamination that came to life in the collection “No ID.” F / W 2017. Moreover, the Timelessness F / W 12-13 collection, too, includes strong references to the Tibetan Mandala recalling the journey to discover yourself in a real-world tour.
