“Welcome to the 75° Annual Golden Globes and happy new year Hollywood!” This was the opening line of Seth Meyer’s monologue during the ceremony that took place on January 7th, getting the ball of the hottest part of the Award Season 2018 rolling.
The Oscar Race started and who knows which movies succeeded to get more prizes and statues. In our opinion, these are the 10 horses to bet on!

#1 Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
_______________
The first can only be the unquestioned protagonist of the Golden Globes and SAG Awards 2018! The latest Martin McDonagh’s work is an intense movie, with top-class performances and a unique style, able to make you laugh and cry at the same time.
Probably we’ll see it nominated again for the same categories (Best Movie, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Supporting Actor and Best Score) and with no doubt it will get people to talk about it.

_______________
The sweetness of the more tender love that you will see this year, and surely the most surprising, thanks to the master Guillermo Del Toro who with his monsters can create incredible stories.
Already presented in Venice, during the 74° Film Festival premiere, The Shape of Water had caught the hearts of all, giving the impression to be one of the most romantic story ever.
At the Golden Globes it was the most nominated film, but it had to bump into the McDonagh’s realism, and it will continue most likely to collide with it for the whole season.

#3 The Post
_______________
A movie that technically should win everything, with an unedited legendary triad: Steven Spielberg-Tom Hanks-Meryl Streep.
With a pretty modern plot that allows easy parallels between past and present, “The Post” will remain in the history of cinema for the convergence of these big names, and surely it will be nominated for the main categories (Best Movie, Director, Actor and Actress in a Leading Role, Score) increasing the quality of the nominated “teams”.

#4 Lady Bird
_______________
The Greta Gerwig’s debut as movie director has been a great one, with two Golden Globes, for Best Movie and Best Performance by an Actress (Saoirse Ronan) in a Musical or Comedy.
A well-done dramedy, about the daughter–mother relationships, but able to touch the spectator deeply any kindly.
Gerwig could make Natalie Portman satisfied with some nomination as Best Director, and Saoirse Ronan will have again the chance to win within the Hollywood actress Major League.

_______________
The born of a summer love, and the classic beauty brought on the big screen. Luca Guadagnino and James Ivory signed an important movie with a nice touch away from the big productions and a maniacal precision in every single detail (to be noticed the temporal frame of the 80s in Italy).
Even though, it came back empty-handed from the Golden Globes, “Call Me By Your Name” will be nominated in several important categories.

#6 The Darkest Hour
_______________
Joe Wright directed the movie that will finally make Gary Oldman win an Oscar! At least we hope so…
Oldman has been deserving an award like that for much longer than Leo Di Caprio, yet no one walked away or stood up for him. So, Oldman himself dressed up as Churchill and decided to fight his own battle.
Now we can only wait and see if really, quoting the good old Winston, “the era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to its close.”

#7 Dunkirk
_______________
And speaking of old successful British battles, how not to include in this list the latest work of Christopher Nolan? With a structure that only the crazy director of “Memento” could handle that well and with a grueling and constant suspense, “Dunkirk” will be nominated in some of the most important “technical” categories.
A certain nomination is the one of Hans Zimmer. Sampling a pocket watch, Zimmer has been able to create an incredibly distressing score without which the movie would have lost most of his power.

Oscar Race 2018
#8 I, Tonya
_______________
Tonya Harding, American figure skater with a troubled past and a typical personality easy to hate because of the negative comments by gossip media, is now interpreted by Margot Robbie, who’s easier to love.
A well-written and well-directed biopic, that wouldn’t look bad with a Best Director nomination.
The two actresses that hold the whole movie, Margot Robbie, after winning the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in a Comedy, and the neo-Golden Globe and SAG Awards winner Allison Janney, should have an easy life in terms of nominations, and Janney could even gain the most coveted statue.

#9 Coco
_______________
The Pixar mark is always synonymous of quality, and continues to prove it. When Pixar releases a new movie, there is always little doubt about who will win in the animation categories (8 wins out of 10 nominations at the Academy Awards), but this year, with Coco, we can still be sure of that.
A movie that has not a very elaborate plot, indeed it is very similar to others films of the same studio, but with such intense and touching moments that only Pixar can bring on screen.

#10 Wind River
_______________
Pretty snubbed by the most important awards, “Wind River” still has the chance to get noticed and obtain the visibility it deserves.
Photography and direction are impeccable, Jeremy Renner is cold and ruthless like the setting around him, and the score of Nick Cave and his longtime magic partner Warren Ellis is perfect.
At least for these three elements, this movie could and should take a lot of nomination and awards.
